We’re having an extended winter, it looks like. And while I’d like to be outdoors shooting, the rainy and cool weather sometimes keeps me from practicing the kind of photography I’d like to right now. Rather than wallow in pity, I decided to buy an  Art S. Buck Artist Model.

I need to keep my brain primed and engaged with the techniques of lighting and POSING a human model, even when I’m not able to actually work with people.

The model is designed to be sold to artists, of the drawing kind. However, it’s not too bad as a photography subject, although I do wish that all of its skin was the same matte texture as its head. It would make for better flash photography, as shiny plastic is hardly natural looking in a human form.

I’m excited to finally have a model I can work with; one that wont get bored, or tired, or hungry, and that I can pose just so. She’s got 26 or so points of articulation, which will have to do. I do wish her neck and hips were more flexible though. I can’t manage to get her to take some seated poses that involve wrapping her arms around both of her legs; she’s just not pliable enough. That’s not so bad though, not every woman is that flexible either, so at least I can come up with poses that many, if not all women can assume pretty easily.  Look at some of our work from last night.

I think I bought the last one of this particular model figure from Amazon, but you can find others , male models , grey models, manga models…
