I came across this at DIYPhotography.net. If you’re just getting into off camera lighting, and consider yourself a portrait photographer this might be helpful to you.
It demonstrates the results of an off camera flash positioned at several spots within 360 degrees around a human subject. On the horizontal Axis is marked the location of the flash within the circle. On the vertical axis is the position of the flash head, specifically whether it is tilted 45 degrees up , down, or flat (parallel) to the subjects’ spine.
One of my go-to positions is 45 degrees to the right, flash pointed down at 45 deg to the subject , the image in the first row 2nd column.

This photo was taken with a similar lighting setup, except I had 2 continuous lights as the source light. One for the background, and one for myself, the subject.
